One of the great things about playing The 1966 Game is that you can find game pieces everywhere, even in unexpected places.

Here’s one ripped from the headlines.

Remember Grace Slick?

Grace was the Earth Mother of the hippie drug culture, the frontwoman for the Jefferson Airplane, a shining symbol of the excess which the 1960s represented. She wasn’t a Johnson supporter, wasn’t even political, but she was out there, fearless in a sort of stoned addled way. (Some of her music from that era even holds up, although none of her later stuff does.)

Grace Slick scared the straights half to death — she scared them half to Nixon.

So who’s Grace Slick now?

This game is fun.

Understand that in The 1966 Game left is right, and right is left. After nearly 40 years in power it is natural that the right would create excess — and excess piled on top of the excess.

Thus, Ann Coulter.

Hard to see Coulter as the uber-hippie? Shouldn’t be. Little Ben Domenechs are getting off on Coulter’s sound just like their stoned uncles got off on Slick. And mainstream scolds like Keith Olbermann are now condeming Coulter, just as their predecessors once dumped on the hippies.

It’s fun. It fits.

And it defangs Coulter’s hate quite nicely, don’cha think?

So join us next time we play The 1966 Game.

The following statement from the LINK to GRACE SLICK in your piece on “Who Is Grace Slick Today?” is hard for me to take as a Liberal Democrat and Hippie since the 60’s:
“Despite being an icon of the liberal ’60s counter-culture, Slick describes herself as a “life-long Republican”.”
I woudl certainly hope that she did not support the present administration in Washington D.C. and the
Illegal War in Iraq, killing of innocent Iraqis, the Illegal Spying on Citizens of the United States, the Secret Prisons in foreign countries used by the present administration sanctioed torturing of prisoners, and leaving the war in Afganistan unfinished by not defeating the Taliban nor finding, capturing, nor killing Osama Bin Ladin before staring an Illegal War on another front, Iraq.
I would cetrtainly hope that if she is truely “a Life Long Republican” she had the good judgement not to vote in that manner if she actually voted at all.

I personally LOVE Grace Slick and Jefferson Airplane’s music. I’m just 41 but always been really into the 6os counterculture deeply, but I also LOVE Ann Coulter having read a couple of her books. These intelligent women with allittle attitude and passion turn me on. Timeless traits that seem to be rare except for the ignorant ones of late that are all based on hate without much fact. What ever happened to individualism?

Grace Slick was kidding around saying she was/is Republican. Her parents were Republicans. She’s always described herself as being to “the left of the Sandinistas.” She was/is awesome and quite a character!

Her father was an investment banker, she’s could very well be a republican. She probably has a lot of investments, unearned income, most wealthy people don’t like to pay taxes on that unearned wealth, so they identify with republicans.
